Description of Saltaire Village


  • Saltaire was a ground breaking model village built to house the workforce of the massive Salts Mill, the largest factory in the World, built for by Sir Titus Salt during Queen Victorias reign
  • The village ncluded housing, churches, meeting halls and other community buildings such as the Victoria Hall.
  • The village is very picturesque with magnificent stone architecture and a lovely park
  • A UNESCO World Herotage Site
  • There are shops, places to eat.

  • Surrounded by Cities & Towns: Shipley 900m, Baildon 2.2km, Esholt (TV film village of Emmerdale) 4.8km, Bradford 5km, Haworth (Bronte Country) 5km, Keighley (pronounced Key-th-ly), Leeds Bradford Airport 9km
  • On the south bank of the Leeds Liverpool Canal the longest canal in Britain at 127 miles. Conecting The Irish sea to the North Sea, in conjunction with the River Mersey, River Aire in Leeds, the Calder cana,land the Humber Estuary .
  • The River Aire is 60 metres further north.
  • Built next to the Leeds Liverpool Canal. Canals were the main goods highways at that time and was neaded because the Salt mill produced miles of heavy cloth a day.

  • Salt Mill was Built in the Victorian Era in 1853 for Sir Titus Salt.
  • It was the largest factory in the world at a time when England was the Worlds leader in the Industrial Revolution and West Yorkshire was the woolen capitol of the world.
  • Compared to other mills the conditions for the workers were better.
  • The largest room, 600 feet long, was on the top floor.
  • The mill turned out miles of woolen cloth per day.

New Mill Saltaire


  • Salt Mill was extended with the building of the New Mill located on the other side of the Canal.
  • A Water supply was diverted into the mill by a weir across the River Aire.

Bingley Five Rise Locks

  • Bingley Five Rise Locks is the steepest flight of locks in Great Britain & a major tourist attraction in the area.
  • The locks lift barges & boats 18 metres (59 feet)
  • There are 5 locks with 6 sets of double gates.
  • Opened in 1774
  • Well worth a visit especially on a nice summers day when there will be plenty of boats using the locks.
