Big Brum is the locals name for the square clock tower that soars from the corner Council House on one side & the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery on the other, the chimes of which are similar to those of Londons Houses of Parliament..

The Council House was built in 1879 and Big Brum added in 1885.

The building of the Town Hall started in 1832 and opened in an unfinished state 2 years later with a Musical festival.

The building is faced with Marble with a brick core. In 1835 the building was stengthened and enlarged in both 1837 & 1850.

The magnificent concert pipe organ fills one end of the hall and has 6,000 pipes.

The massive museum & art gallery is the largest local authority one in England containing over half a million world-wide objects that date from 200,000 years ago through to the present date.

Entrance is usually free, but there may be a charge for special events or exebitions.

BT Tower Birmingham

The BT tower in Birmingham was opened by Birminghams Lord Mayor Alderman James S. Meadows in 1967 and took 3 years to build.

The tower has 26 ofice & equipment stories and a further 5 gallery levels housing the various aerials

The square shape of the tower has specially designed corners to minimize swaying in high winds and which also improve the look of the tower.

Permission to increase it's height from 500 feet (150 metres) to 600 feet (180 metres) was refused by the Ministry of Aviation.

O2 Academy Birmingham

The O2 Academy in Birmingham is a Music & Concert venue has 3 performance areas named 1, 2 and 3. Each one has it's own box office & queuing area so that all 3 venues can be open at the same time.

  • Academy 1. The main auditorium can hold over 3000 people with seating for 600 on the 3 sides balcony, and is where the gigs of top International performers are presented.
  • Academy 2. can hold 600
  • Academy 3. can hold 250

The 2 smaller area often promote new & up & comming talented artists.

Taxis Moor Street Railway Station


The Taxi rank is on Colmore Row just before Church Street

Leave the Station by the Livery Street Exit & turn left. Turn right into the one way street Colmore Row and the taxi rank is on the right 100 meters along the street just before the church tower on the left.
