Transport - Buses Leeds & Yorkshire

Leeds Bus Station interior

The Leeds bus Station is located to the rear of Kirkgate market. There are 2 entrances, one in New York Street and the other in Dyer Street.  To the rear of Leeds Bus Station is Leeds Coach station for National express coaches . There are connecting doors between the two.

Leeds bus station has a bus information office, toilets, a cafe, newsagents and take away snacks. At the bus stands, there are electronic doors which will only open when a bus is parked there.

Free Leeds City centre bus

A Free City Bus, has operated from 30 January.

The service runs on a clockwise circular route around, and through the city centre, the shopping, business and cultural districts. see route below

Brand-new, easy access buses, built by Yorkshire firm Optare and operated by First, will run every few minutes from 6:30am to 7:30pm, Monday to Saturday.  Free Leeds City Bus will provide an ideal, free link to key parts of the city centre for people arriving in Leeds by train, bus or coach, reducing the need for them to bring their cars into the city.

The buses will be brightly marked with the Leeds Free City Bus logo, which will also be on the roof so it can be spotted by people from their office windows.

Leeds has a very good system of public transport via independent bus operators. Most main routes have a 10 minute, or more frequent service during the business day.

The independent bus operators are operated through MetroLine.

The Leeds Coach Station is located to the rear of Kirkgate market. There are 2 entrances, one in New York Street and the other in Dyer Street.  To the rear of Leeds Coach Station is Leeds Bus Station, there are connecting doors between the two stations.

The Leeds Coach Station is easy to find at the Dyer Street end, but not as easy to find from the New York Street end, but just walk through the bus station and look for the connecting doors just beyond half way down the bus station on the left

The Leeds Coach Station has an information desk a ticket office, a national Express information booth, toilets and a Burger King food oulet

Leeds Taxis

There are 2 types of Taxis in Leeds

• Black cabs
• Private hire

Black cabs

Black cabs all have a large illuminated Taxi sign on the roof, traditionally they are white with a black boot and black bonnet hood, some now are mobile advertising and can be any colour.

Black cabs are the only type of taxi allowed to pick passengers up from the Taxi ranks located throughout the city centre. Passengers are allowed to hail these taxis in the street with an upward outstretched arm and a taxi shout to attract the drivers attention.

Private hire cabs

Private hire cabs have a large sign on the 2 front doors, these cabs are not allowed to pick up passengers who hail them in the street, although they often do.  You are supposed to pre arrange a pick up point, usually by telephoning there office.  Many of the nightclubs  have contracts with Private hire companies so that customers can be picked up outside the nightclub. There are several Private hire offices in the city centre where you can obtain a cab. There are usually queues at these offices but these have diminished in length now that the bar and nightclub license hours have been extended.
